When did you first become aware of the watch industry, and when did you know you wanted to be involved in it?

The biggest challenge, perhaps, was the Covid-19 pandemic. I still recall 18 March 2020, when all the factories in our vicinity were forced to close. Our employees kept asking: “What do we do now? Other brands are shutting down—should we follow suit?” At that time, there was no precedent to guide us, and management had to make decisions in a climate of deep uncertainty. We chose to prioritise the safety of our team, suspending all activity despite the financial consequences. Initially, everyone expected to return to work within a week, but the reality was far more drawn out. How is Panerai approaching emerging technologies like AI?
In the commercial sphere, technology now generates vast quantities of data. One simple example: the system is programmed to switch out a cutting blade after 220 uses, even if it remains functional, in order to maintain consistency and avoid quality issues in subsequent pieces.
When it comes to creativity, we have experimented with generative AI, even going so far as to ask a computer to design new Swiss movements Panerai super clone watches. But the results have yet to impress. This is something I still wrestle with. As concerns about AI-generated content continue to grow—and detection systems become more sophisticated—I find myself wondering: what is the future of luxury? If a watch, crafted to endure across generations, were designed entirely by software, would it still hold the same value? To be honest, I’m not sure I would buy such a piece myself.
Panerai is known for innovation. Why is the Submersible Elux an important addition to the brand’s watch portfolio?

Striving for minimalism is often the ultimate challenge in watchmaking.
